Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT)

The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission provides valuable data and information about the world's oceans and its terrestrial surface water. SWOT is developed jointly by NASA and the Centre National d’Études Spatiales (CNES), with contributions from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the United Kingdom Space Agency (UKSA).

Since its launch on December 16, 2022, SWOT has been measuring ocean surface topography and land surface water elevation with remarkable accuracy, using radar interferometry to produce detailed two-dimensional maps. Its observations help scientists better understand ocean currents and fine-scale processes, while also providing valuable data on changes in water storage across major lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and wetlands.
